It might have been destined that Ryota Kataoka encountered Taiko drums. He was born with weak eyesights and the boy who loved painting went completely blind at the age of 10. His heart was roaming in the darkness and Ryota could not find any passions... until he encountered Taiko. The sound fulfilled his heart and, soon, all kinds of beats started flooding out. After he graduated from Sophia University with the top honor, majoring in Study of Social Welfare, he became a professional Taiko drummer. His drums have healed and encouraged so many people and has been featured on the national television and radio programs frequently. Starting January 2011, he has been studying at the Teacher's College of Columbia University as a visiting scholar. The life in New York City opened "his mind's eyes" and he has started to break new ground.

片岡亮太が和太鼓とであったのは運命だったかもしれない。生まれつきの弱視として生まれた少年は、失明とともに大好きな絵との別れをわずか１０歳のときに強いられた。彼の心は暗闇の中を彷徨い続け、打ち込めるものなど無いかと思われた。和太鼓に出会うまでは。和太鼓の響きは、彼の心をみたした。ほどなく様々なリズムが溢れ出した。上智大学で社会福祉学を学び、首席で卒業した後、彼はプロの和太鼓奏者となった。彼の和太鼓は多くの人々の心を癒し、勇気づけてきた。様々なメディアに取り上げられ、テレビやラジオにも多数出演をした。２０１１年１月からは、コロンビア大学のティーチャーズカレッジにて、障害学を学ぶため、一年間の短期留学中。マンハッタンでの生活で様々な刺激を得て、彼の演奏は今、新境地を開こうとしている。
