Music in Geneva: It’s all good

Two questions I’m normally asked – “What’s going on” and “How was the show?” Let’s catch up on the “how was stuff.”
The Sen and Hibiki Taiko Drums concert was not what I expected. It was somuch more! Maybe some of the Japanese-Americans in the audience knew what to expect, but the other 400 of us had never seen anything like this.
There was no passive drum circle thing going on here. These guys were athletes – rock stars in Japan. They played their unusual percussion instruments on stage and throughout the Smith Opera House and continuously interacted with the audience. Incidentally, these concertgoers were the most responsive and appreciative group of people that I have seen in recent years at this venue. Technical director Bruce Purdy’s lighting effects took this show to a higher level.
I heard a patron remark while leaving, “I thought I would have to go to New York City to see a show like this.”
Prior to the show and while still outside the Smith, a lady of Japanese descent was trying unsuccessfully to photograph a poster of the drummers. I told her that I could probably obtain one of these posters for her after the show. She was happy to hear that, but told me “Japanese promise applies.” I said OK, whatever, before I thought to ask what happens if one breaks “Japanese promise”?
She described a ritual involving a sword. That was all I needed to hear – I made darn sure she got her poster!

Music in Geneva: It’s all good ージェネバで音楽：良いことばかりだ

普段、二つの質問をされる。「調子はどうだい？」それから「ショーはどうだった？」。今日は「どんな代物だったか」って話をしてみよう。
仙・響の和太鼓コンサートは予想外のものだった。予想なんてものをはるかに超えていた！多分、観衆の中にいた日系アメリカ人たちはどんなものかを知っていたのだろうけど、他の４００人には、全くもって未知なるものだった。
ドラムサークル的な消極的パフォーマンスは一切見受けられなかった。彼らはアスリートであり、ロックスターだった。彼らは、その見たことも無い打楽器をスミスオペラハウス中に打ち鳴らし、観衆と常につながっていた。偶然にも、この日の観衆は、ここ数年でももっともノリの良い観衆たちでもあった。テクニカルディレクターのブルース・パーディーの照明も素晴らしかった。
去り際に観衆の一人が言った。「こういうショーを見るには、マンハッタンに行かなければ行けないとばかり思っていたわ」
ショーが始まる前に、オペラハウスの外で、ある女性が和太鼓奏者たちのポスターを写真に収めようと四苦八苦していた。ショーの後にポスターをもらってくることができると思うよ、と彼女に言うと、彼女は嬉しそうに聞きながら、「日本人との約束よ」と言った。「まあいいけど」と私は言ってから、「それを破ったらどうなるの？」と聞き返した。
彼女は、刀を使った儀式について語り始めた。それだけで十分！コンサート後、私はポスターを丁重に彼女に差し上げたのだった。
